Mumbai: Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s upcoming film Gangubai Kathiawadi, featuring Alia Bhatt in the title role, has run into legal trouble.
The film is on the journey of real-life Gangubai, who runs a brothel. Her son Babuji Rawji Shah has filed a case against Alia, Bhansali Productions, writer Hussain Zaidi — on whose novel The Mafia Queens of Mumbai the film is based — and reporter Jane Borges, whose research was the premise of the book.
In his petition, Babuji has claimed that some portions of The Mafia Queens of Mumbai are defamatory and an infringement upon his right to privacy, self-respect and liberty, Hindustan Times has reported.
Babuji wants printing and circulation of the book to be stopped for good, chapters pertaining to Gangubai’s life deleted and production of the film stopped.
Bombay civil court, which heard the case last week, has asked the defendants to respond by January 7.
