CBI Arrests RG Kar Ex-Principal Sandip Ghosh, Cop In Kolkata Rape-Murder Case
Kolkata: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday arrested former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital Sandip Ghosh and an officer of Kolkata Police for alleged evidence tampering and misleading investigation in the rape-murder of a junior doctor at the state-run health facility last month.
Tala police station SHO Abhijit Mandal, who initially investigated the case, was picked by the central agency for alleged delay in filing of FIR and missing evidence. Mandal had sent teams to the crime scene after the 31-year-old doctor’s body was discovered in the seminar room on the fourth floor of the hospital on August 9.
Ghosh and Mandal will be produced before the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) Court in Sealdah on Sunday, according to reports.
Earlier, Ghosh was arrested by the central agency in a separate investigation into financial irregularities.
On August 26, the CBI conducted a second round of polygraph tests on the former principal in connection with their investigation into the rape and murder case. The Calcutta High Court has asked the central agency to submit a progress report on the case on September 17.
ASKED TO LEAVE ABRUPTLY….
The arrests came just hours after protesting doctors returned from chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence without meeting her. “When we came here, we had demanded video recording or live-streaming of the talks. We were not allowed. Then the chief minister came out and appealed to us to join the talks, promising that we would receive the minutes of the meeting. We discussed among ourselves and agreed to join the meeting without live-streaming or video recording,” a doctor told the media.
However, they were allegedly unceremoniously asked to leave. “When we conveyed this to Minister of State for Health Chandrima Bhattacharya, we were told to leave the venue because it was too late and they had been waiting for us for three hours.,” the doctor added.
Mamata refused live-streaming the meeting since RG Kar Medical College and Hospital issue is being heard in the Supreme Court. “I am requesting, please come and talk as you had requested for today’s meeting. At least come and have tea with me. Why are you disrespecting me? I keep waiting, but it seems you don’t want to meet. Forget politics for now… I will sign the minutes of the meeting, but there will be no live-streaming. It can happen only after Supreme Court permission,” she told the agitating doctors who had gathered at her residence.
