Kolkata: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested former RG Kar Hospital principal Sandip Ghosh on Monday evening over financial misconduct, PTI reported.
Ghosh has been questioned almost daily for over a fortnight since Calcutta High Court ordered CBI to take over the case from Kolkata Police.
Besides his role being under scanner post the brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor at the state-run hospital on August 9, there have been charges of financial irregularities against Ghosh as well.
Ghosh was taken to CBI Anti-Corruption Branch in Nizam Palace from CBI special crime branch office in the Salt Lake CGO Complex in Kolkata. He is likely to be produced in court on Tuesday.
This is the second arrest in the case, after Kolkata Police took civic volunteer Sanjoy Roy in custody within days of the crime.
The CBI, which conducted a polygraphy test on Ghosh, has slapped criminal conspiracy, cheating, and dishonesty charges against him along with Section 7 of Prevention of Corruption Act in connection with financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital.
The cases account for cognizable offences and are non-bailable in nature.
Ghosh served as principal of RG Kar from February 2021 to September 2023. He was transferred in October 2023, but returned to his role at the same hospital within a month.
He continued in that role until the day when the semi-naked body of the postgraduate trainee doctor was found in a seminar hall of the hospital.
The crime led to widespread outrage and protests which have continued abated.
