Kolkata: Hours after a CBI team served notice and went to Abhishek Banerjee’s house to question his wife Rujira in connection with the coal smuggling case on Sunday afternoon, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee Banerjee and her nephew said they won’t be cowed down or be intimidated.
Abhishek took to Twitter to express his defiance.
“At 2 pm today, the CBI served a notice in the name of my wife. We have full faith in the law of the land. However, if they think they can use these ploys to intimidate us, they are mistaken. We are not the ones who would ever be cowed down,” Abhishek tweeted, along with the image of a notice that CBI Additional Superintendent of Police Umesh Kumar left at his residence.
Mamata countered the CBI action at a programme to celebrate International Mother Language Day.
“As long as there is life in me, I will not be afraid of any intimidation. We have fought against guns and are not afraid of fighting against rats,” the CM was quoted as saying by PTI.
“A CBI team did go Abhishek’s home but they could not serve any notice. The team went back. The officers said they would come again. It is known that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will try to scare us before the polls. We are not worried,” said Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha member Saugata Roy.
Political analysts feel this is a tit for tat by the BJP after a special court asked Union Home minister Amit Shah to appear personally or through a lawyer on February 22 in connections with a defamation case filed by Abhishek on August 11, 2018.
With assembly elections in West Bengal to be held in April-May, the political temperature in the state has been rising during the last few weeks.
