CBSE Asks Schools To Report About Students With Low Attendance Ahead Of Board Exams

New Delhi: With the CBSE board exams, beginning on February 15, 2020, all affiliated schools have been asked to prepare a report on student attendance and inform the regional office about those with attendance shortage by January 7.

As per CBSE examination bylaws, a student should have a minimum of 75 per cent attendance to be eligible for taking the board exams. The CBSE will only consider valid reasons such as prolonged illness or death of parents for condonation of shortage.

A circular issued to school principals on December 27 said all cases of condonation for Class X and XII students should reach the regional office by January 7 and no case will be accepted after that.

Valid reason for condonation of shortage of attendance are as follows:

  • Prolonged illness
  • Loss of father/mother or some other such incident leading to his/her absence from the school and meriting special consideration
  • Any other reason for similar serious nature
  • Authorised participation in sports at national level organized by CBSE / SGFI.
  • Authorised participation in sports at national/ international level organized by recognised federations.

CBSE has also issued a standard operating procedure (SOP) which the schools have to follow while dealing with students having less attendance. These include warning the students and parents and maintaining their records.

The SOPs were prepared after it was noticed that students failing in their attendance were faring poorly in board exams.
