CBSE Introduces Changes In Class XI, XII Exam Formats; Check What’s New

New Delhi: With the aim of enhancing students’ competency in applying concepts to real-life scenarios, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced significant changes in the examination format for Classes XI and XII.

Starting from the 2024-25 session, the exam pattern for classes XI and XII will feature a higher percentage of competency-based questions, CBSE officials told PTI.

Such questions will assess students’ ability to apply theoretical knowledge to practical situations, aligning with the objectives of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Competency-focused questions like multiple-choice questions (MCQs), case-based questions and source-based integrated questions will increase from 40 to 50 per cent.

On the other hand, constructed response questions, including short and long answers, have been reduced from 40 to 30 per cent.

“The main emphasis of the Board was to create an educational ecosystem that would move away from rote memorization and towards learning that is focused on developing the creative, critical and systems thinking capacities of students to meet the challenges of the 21st century,” CBSE Director (Academics) Joseph Emanuel said.

CBSE clarified that there will be no modifications to Class IX and X exam formats.
