CBSE Seeks Feedback From Stakeholders On Biannual Class X Exams From 2026

New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has sought responses from all stakeholders, including schools, teachers, parents, students and even the general public, on a proposal to hold the Class-X Board examinations twice a year from the 2025-26 session.

This proposal is in tune with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 that plans to bring about widespread reforms in the education system.

“NEP 2020 has recommended that students will be given an opportunity to improve their performance in Board examinations. A meeting was organised in the Ministry of Education, chaired by the Minister of Education where certain issues were discussed,” the public notice by CBSE, issued on Tuesday, said.

Two Board exams every year from 2025-26, development of a draft policy for this, and responses from all stakeholders were discussed in the meeting. The draft policy has already been uploaded on the CBSE website www.cbse.gov.in and stakeholders may send in their responses by March 9, 2025, the notice further stated.

The proposal is to allow a candidate two attempts in the Class X Board exams with the option to retain her/his best score. While this will be a great opportunity for students to better their performance in the first Board exam in their lives, there are issues related to infrastructure.

“This is a very good proposal, no doubt. A very good student may falter in the first ‘big exam’ in her or his life and this can leave a mark on her/his performance in all exams thereafter. A second opportunity will help such students gain confidence. However, there are other issues, such as infrastructure and expenses. There is also the issue of term schedules that may get hampered. We will have to go through the draft proposal carefully before responding,” a school principal said.
