New Delhi: India’s delayed population census process is likely to begin in September, Reuters reported quoting two persons aware of the matter.
With the last census being conducted in 2011, the decennial exercise was scheduled for 2021.
But several reasons, including the COVID-19 pandemic, pushed the process back.
Now, two government officials directly involved in the process have confirmed that it will take around 18 months to complete the comprehensive nationwide survey, with the results expected to around March 2026, according to Reuters.
It’s important that the census is done as soon as possible as currently most data sets rely on the outdated 2011 census, rendering many government schemes and policies less effective.
The Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation have been working on a detailed timeline for the census, according to the report. However, the nod from the Prime Minister’s Office is awaited.
