New Delhi: The Union government on Tuesday increased the excise duty on petrol by Rs 10 and diesel by 13 per litre to shore up revenues and make up for the loss suffered due to the Covid-19 lockdown.
This will come into effect from May 6, an official notification said.
Finance Ministry officials, however, said the hike in excise duty will not impact the retail price of petrol and diesel.
The revenue generated from these duties will used for infrastructure and other developmental items of expenditure, the officials added.
