Bhubaneswar: In a major relief to commuters, the Centre has approved three bypass road projects worth Rs 544 crore for Bhubaneswar and nearby areas.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has accorded clearance to three long-awaited bypasses at Rajasunakhala, Begunia, and Pubusahi, promising to substantially reduce travel time and end daily traffic snarls that have plagued the region for years.

Officials said these projects are expected to ease traffic flow on key routes linking Bhubaneswar with nearby semi-urban and rural areas.

Sharing details in a post on X, Bhubaneswar MP Aparajita Sarangi said the sanctioned will cover a total distance of 18 kilometres and are expected to address long-pending traffic bottlenecks in the region.

The Rajasunakhala bypass has been approved at a cost of Rs 156 crore, while the Begunia bypass project has received approval worth Rs 118 crore, she said, adding the Pubusahi–Sarua–Taratua bypass corridor, the largest among the three, has been sanctioned at Rs 270 crore.

The BJP leader said she had personally urged Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari to approve the projects, highlighting the persistent traffic congestion faced by commuters in these areas. She added that the proposals have now received clearance and will soon move to the tendering stage.

Stressing that the execution of the projects will be monitored closely to ensure timely completion, the Parliamentarian said the upcoming bypass corridors are expected to substantially reduce traffic pressure on existing roads while improving mobility for residents and commuters in Bhubaneswar and nearby regions.

“Development and Service are the only agenda items,” she said, expressing gratitude to the Centre over the approval of the projects.
