Bhubaneswar: The Centre has decided to take up the development of 36 existing dams in Odisha.
According to the decision taken at the Union Cabinet Sub-Committee meeting on Thursday, these 36 dams will be developed in the second and third phase under the Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Project (DRIP). However, it is not yet clear as to which dams in the state have been included under the project.
The overall implementation of the project would be coordinated by Central Water Commission (CWC).
The objectives of DRIP are to improve the safety and performance of selected existing dams and associated paraphernalia in a sustainable manner and strengthen the dam safety institutional set-up in the state as well as at the central level.
The implementation of the projects will be done in two phases within 10 years. The project work will begin from April 1 next year and end by March 2031.
