Cuttack: About 4 months after an 8-member chain-snatching gang was busted, another gang seems to have become active in the city as 4 persons have fallen victim to such crime in the last 2 days. The new 3-member gang targeted a couple in CDA area on Thursday morning.

According to police sources, software engineer Harekrushan Parida working in Bengaluru and his wife Prangya had come on a visit to the latter’s paternal house in CDA. At around 7.30 am on the day when they were walking back to the house in Sector 10 from Biju Patnaik Park, the looters came on a black colour Pulsar bike and intercepted them.

One of the looters threatened them to hand over their valuables at knife-point. While Harekrushna tried to run away, the looters attacked him with sharp weapons. He sustained injuries on hands and legs. They also attacked Prangya with the weapons.

The looters took away two gold chains, a locket and a pair of ear-rings worth more than Rs 1 lakh from the couple and fled. The couple are undergoing treatment in a private hospital.

Interestingly, unlike in most cases, the looters did not try to hide their identity. They had not covered their faces either with helmets or masks. All of them are in the age group of 25 to 30 years, the sources said.

In another case on Wednesday, the looters attacked 57-year-old Usharani Biswal of Rajendra Nagar, who works in Cuttack Municipal Corporation, and snatched away her gold ornaments.

The wife of a retired bank officer staying in Sector 7 of CDA was also attacked and her gold ornaments snatch in similar manner on Wednesday. The sources suspected that tll the cases involve the gang using the black Pulsar bike.

It may be noted that Cuttack Sadar police had arrested eight persons of a chain-snatching gang and recovered stolen items from their possession on December 11 last year.

Police had claimed that they were involved in several similar offences in the area of Cuttack Ring Road, Cuttack-Paradeep Road, Cuttack-Bhubaneswar Road, Bhubaneswar-Khurda Road, Puri Bypass Road and Jagatpur-Manguli-Choudwar Road.
