Chandigarh University Woman Student Blackmailed Into Sharing Videos By ‘Boyfriend’: Reports
Chandigarh: The two men arrested in the Chandigarh University leaked videos case had allegedly blackmailed the third accused, a woman student, into filming in the common washroom and sharing their videos.
Accused Sunny Mehta (23), rumoured to be the woman’s boyfriend, and his friend Rankaj Verma (31) had threatened to make her private videos viral, India Today reported.
The trio was sent on 7-day police remand on Monday while their mobile phones and a few related videos are being investigated by a forensics team.
Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann ordered a three-member-all-women Special Investigation Team (SIT) of police officials to probe the case under the supervision of senior IPS officer Gurpreet Kaur Deo. An FIR under Section 354-C (voyeurism) of the Indian Penal Code and Information Technology Act has been registered in the matter.
Notably, massive protests erupted in Chandigarh University at midnight on Saturday after the videos of around 60 girls taking baths in the hostel were leaked. Protests were called off around 1:30 am on Monday after the administration accepted the demands put forward by the students. Authorities at Chandigarh University have suspended classes for six days till September 24.
The varsity, in a statement, said that one video was circulated. Moreover, it was captured and circulated by the accused. They said that the girl had made the video and shared it herself with her friend in Himachal Pradesh.
