New Delhi: Chaotic scenes were witnessed at New Delhi railway station here due to overcrowding at platforms 15 and 14 on Saturday evening.
According to reports, the incident took place at 9:55 pm as a huge crowd gathered at the station. The passengers panicked after the sudden announcement about cancellation of two trains going to Prayagraj, leading to chaos and a stampede-like situation. Four women fainted due to suffocation and had to be hospitalised, the NDTV reported.
Four fire engines have reached the spot to assist in the relief work. “A call was received that 15 people had been injured in a stampede-like situation at New Delhi railway station. 4 fire tenders are at the spot,” the ANI reported, quoting sources in Delhi Fire Service.
In a video, which has gone viral on social media, two persons can be seen lying unconscious with passengers around them attempting to resuscitate them.
Denying reports of a stampede, the railway administration has appealed to the passengers to remain calm and not pay attention to rumours. Additional security forces have been deployed to control the situation at the railway station, the reports added.
