Raipur: The Chhattisgarh High Court on Thursday convicted Amit Jogi, son of former Chhattisgarh chief minister Ajit Jogi, in 2003 murder case of Nationalist Congress Party leader Ramavatar Jaggi. The court has set aside his earlier acquittal by a trial court.
A division bench overturned the 2007 verdict that had given Amit Jogi the benefit of doubt and directed him to surrender within three weeks, according to counsel for the Central Bureau of Investigation.
Ramavatar Jaggi, who was the treasurer of the NCP, was shot dead in Raipur in 2003. At the time, the undivided Congress government in the newly formed state of Chhattisgarh was headed by Jogi.
In 2007, a special CBI court had convicted 28 accused and sentenced them to life imprisonment. Jogi, who faced charges of criminal conspiracy, was acquitted due to lack of sufficient evidence.
The case took a fresh turn after the CBI challenged the acquittal. Although the High Court had earlier dismissed the appeal in 2011, the Supreme Court last year directed the High Court to reconsider the matter on merit.
Satish Jaggi, son of the slain NCP leader, welcomed the verdict and said that justice had been delivered.
