Bhubaneswar: The Chhattisgarh government has adopted new tactics to delay the hearing of the Mahanadi Water Disputes Tribunal, which has sought a reply from it on the counter proposal by the Odisha government to ensure the release of non-monsoon waters of the river (from November to May) to Hirakud reservoir.
It may be recalled that the Tribunal, while hearing the pleas of Odisha and Chhattisgarh on February 6 this year, had made it clear that if no agreement is reached on the release of the non-monsoon waters as per the interim arrangement, it will hold the final hearing on March 13 on the basis of the proposal submitted by the Odisha government.
Aware that the Tribunal has reserved its interim hearing, the Chhattisgarh government maintained that the Odisha government has not provided the details on the flow of the non-monsoon waters from Kelo and Ib, the two tributaries of Mahanadi, to the Hirakud reservoir.
It has sought the details from Odisha on the volume of non-monsoon water flow of these two tributaries from 1986-87 to 2018-19 and a standard operating procedure (SOP) to regulate their flow to the Hirakud reservoir.
Reliable sources said that the Odisha government has furnished the details in this regard to its Chhattisgarh counterpart.
