Bhubaneswar: Chief Secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi reviewed the progress of Solid Waste Management project of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) during a high-level meeting at the secretariat here on Wednesday. Municipal Commissioner Krishan Kumar presented the updates.
The meeting decided to implement the directions of High Court and National Green Tribunal with regards to construction of waste to energy plant at Bhuasuni.
Speaking to media, Padhi said a waste management plant is an absolute necessity for a modern and growing city like Bhubaneswar. We will implement the orders of court and tribunal on construction of the plant.
The court in their interim order had asked BMC to go ahead with dumping of solid waste at Bhuasuni landfill site. In another case, the tribunal directed Housing and Urban Development department and police to remove any obstructions in construction of waste to energy plant.
Kumar said the project is a statutory requirement for the city. “The state and BMC have a responsibility to construct the plant in accordance with waste management rules. The public hearing of Odisha State Pollution Control Board is scheduled for June 6. BMC and police would provide all help and assistance for successful conduct of the public hearing,” he said.
The project includes development of a scientific dumping yard and establishment of waste to energy plant for safe processing of the waste. All preparatory works for the project have been completed, official sources said.
