Child With Congenital Heart Defect Gets New Lease Of Life At SUM Hospital, Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: A team of doctors of Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital here have saved the life of a seven-year-old girl with congenital hole in the heart.

The doctors successfully closed the ventricular septal defect of the child from Keonjhar.

Explaining her case, the doctors said due to her complex heart condition, the girl was unable to eat properly, her weight was low, and she was unable to perform any physical activity.

The patient weighing only 12 kg when she was admitted to SUM Cardiology OPD. She was evaluated by Associate Professor of the Cardiology department, Dr Kumar Gaurav. After several tests, it was found that the girl was having a large ventricular septal defect with severe obstruction in pulmonary artery.

Due to the problem, the oxygen level in her body was only 40-45 degrees Celsius, said Dr. Gaurav, who referred the patient to Sangram Keshari Behera, Associate Professor CTVS. Dr. Behera and his team decided to operate on the child. Through the rare surgery, the doctors closed the hole in her heart, helping the child breathe comfortably.

“She is fine. She will be discharged from the hospital soon,” said Dr. Kumar Gaurav, Dr. Sangram Keshari Behera, Dr. Debasmita Rath and Dr. Anuspandana Mohapatra while addressing mediapersons on Tuesday.
