Phulbani: Childline members stopped a minor girl from being married off at a village in Pahiraju panchanyat under Guchhapada police limits of Kandhamal district on Wednesday.
Sources said the family members of the 15-year-old girl were preparing to marry her off to a youth from another village under Phiringia police station.
On getting to know about it from reliable sources, members of Phulbani Childline reached the minor girl’s house and counseled her family members. They were finally able to convince her family members that the girl should marry only after attaining the marriageable age of 18.
A couple of days back, Childline officials, with help from Keonjhar police, foiled an attempt to marry off a 11-year-old girl under Anandapur Tehsil of Keonjhar district. In that case the parents of both the minor girl and the groom have been detained. But the 15-year-old groom fled as soon as police reached the wedding venue. The minor girl was rescued.
