Abuja: At least 31 people lost their lives in a stampede at a church event in southern Nigeria’s Port Harcourt city, Reuters reported.
A police spokesperson of Rivers state said that the stampede resulted when hundreds of people who had gathered to receive food at the church broke through a gate.
“People were there earlier and some got impatient and started rushing, which led to stampeding. The police are on the ground monitoring the situation while the investigation is going on,” said Grace Iringe-Koko.
The injured were rushed to the nearby Military hospital.
According to local media, scores of people had gathered for The Kings Assembly ‘Shop for Free’ charity event, held at Port Harcourt Polo Club, with many queueing from Friday to get access.
