Kandhamal: Parents of a Class VIII student have blamed the authorities of Odisha Adarsha Vidyalaya (OAV) at Dhobatota in Odisha’s Kandhamal district for his death on October 27 after he accidentally swallowed a pin used for fixing notices.

The victim, Tushar Mishra, was a resident of Daringbadi and was continuing his education by staying at his maternal uncle’s home in Phulbani.

According to sources, the incident took place on October 15, when Tushar swallowed the pin after removing it from a notice board. Although he and his classmates promptly alerted the schoolteachers, no immediate measures were allegedly taken and instead Tushar was instructed to simply drink water. On returning home, Tushar told his grandfather about the mishap, after which he was rushed to the district headquarters hospital and subsequently referred to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur.  As his condition worsened, he was shifted to Cuttack’s  Sishu Bhavan, where specialists detected the pin lodged in his lungs and removed it. Despite these efforts, Tushar’s condition deteriorated further, leading to paralysis, and he passed away on Monday.

According to Tushar’s parents, he was neither sent home nor taken for medical examination despite complaining of discomfort. “The teacher asked him to swallow rice and drink water. However, because of the pin, the food and water went inside the lungs instead of the food pipe,” said the grieving mother, Tatini Mishra.

They have filed a police complaint, demanding stringent action against those responsible for his death.

Speaking to the media, headmaster of the school, Sankritan Behere, said that they had heard about the news of his death but had no direct information on the incident.
