Kolkata: Passengers on board a SpiceJet flight from Mumbai to Kolkata had a narrow escape after the plane’s right engine caught fire and failed moments before landing on Sunday evening.
Flight SG670 landed at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International (NSCBI) Airport in Kolkata under full emergency around 11.38 pm. There were nearly 188 people on board, including crew.
While officials did not mention the engine flame-out, passengers and those who spotted the fire from the ground narrated their experiences on Reddit.
From their accounts, it seems that the aircraft descended sharply after the engine failed and the pilots had to do their best to maintain altitude.
“I was on SG670 from Mumbai to Kolkata on 9th Nov 2025. The flight was scheduled for 7:10 PM, delayed to 8:30 PM, and actually took off around 8:50 PM. About 20 minutes before landing in Kolkata, around 11:05 PM, there was a loud bang and a big flash of light from the right engine, which looked like fire. The right engine was then switched off, and I noticed the pilot was continuously trying to climb while the plane kept going up and down. I was seated in 17D, close to the wing, and saw the flash very clearly—it was honestly scary,” a passenger posted.
“After about 10 minutes, the pilot announced: “Please fasten you seatbelt as some of you might have noticed there is a issue with one of the engines.”
“I am an atheist, but I remembered every God from all the religions during those 20 minutes.
Can SpiceJet clarify what happened during today’s flight in brief? Passengers deserve transparency and safety,” the passenger added.
A person on the ground responded: “Glad you are safe op!! You just flew over my house at around 630 meter altitude, my whole house had shaken, opened flightradar and it was #2 most tracked plane worldwide at that time…..never have i ever experienced a giant jet that close to my house…..i was trembling as i was tracking the plane…..kudos to the pilots…. absolute heroes they are!!”
Another Reddit user who claims to have recorded the fire said that the matter should be treated very seriously and should not be allowed to pass as a normal technical issue.
“Bro i took a video of your flight , saw it from the terrace of Merlin 5th Avenue. There was a huge fire for 3-4 seconds which almost made it look like an enlarged shooting star. You are correct, even we got scared and saw it descending hastily. Not being able to share the video here. Please connect over dm.
This matter has been raised like any other emergency landing but this was a huge lapse and should be taken very very seriously. We just prayed for no casualties by the looks if it,” the user posted.
