Uniform Syllabus Across Odisha Varsities From Ensuing Academic Session

Bhubaneswar: Ushering sweeping reforms in higher education, Odisha government on Thursday announced rollout of a uniform syllabus across universities from the ensuing academic session.

The move will bring uniformity in the teaching imparted across undergraduate classes and raise the quality of education, besides helping students compete with their peers at the national and international level.

“As of now, different syllabus is followed by different universities. But we have decided to introduce a uniform syllabus and hold examinations within a time-frame,” state Higher Education Minister Arun Kumar Sahu told reporters after chairing a meeting of the state vice-chancellors here.

The state government had last year firmed up plans to have a common syllabus under a choice-based credit system.

During the meeting on Thursday, the vice-chancellors were also told to fill up vacant teaching positions as soon as possible.

Besides, the meeting decided to extend financial aid and free coaching to 100 candidates preparing for the UPSC examinations, the minister said.

Last year, a sub-committee comprising of VCs of different universities had recommended a common choice-based credit syllabus, common entrance for undergraduate and post-graduate courses and timely conduct of examinations.
