Birmingham: Mirabai Chanu won the gold medal in women’s 49 kg weightlifting competition at the Commonwealth Games 2022 as if it was her birth right.
The superiority and pedigree of the 27-year-old lifter from Imphal was never in doubt as she successfully lifted 88 kg in her second attempt of snatch to set a Games and national record.
Chanu, a sliver-medallist at the Tokyo Olympics, went on to rewrite the CWG record in clean and jerk as well.
Chanu thus defended her title that she won at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
It was a memorable day for Indian weightlifters as they won a silver and bronze also.
