Bhubaneswar: The Health and Family Welfare Department on Monday said that COVID-19 resurgence in Odisha cannot be ruled out, considering the sudden spurt in positive cases in some states in the country.

“It is difficult to say whether this sudden rise in cases is a second wave or a local spike. With the relaxation of movement of people from one state to another and rising complecency among them, the possibility of a resurgence of the virus in Odisha cannot be ruled out,” Mishra said.

He further said that all epidemics have a specific lifespan and they show upward and downward trends. “We can say that there is a second wave if there is a sustained rise in infections,” he pointed out.

Mishra further said that the vaccination is going on in full swing. “The state government, however, will abide by the guidelines of the World Health Organisation (WHO) by increasing the number of contact tracing of the persons who have recently returned to Odisha. Apart from this, the targeted sampling has to be done to ascertain the possibility of the rise in positive cases,” he added.
