Mumbai: After the Delhi Court granted interim bail to actor-comedian Rajpal Yadav on Monday, his lawyer claimed that the Rs 9-crore cheque-bounce case was driven by malicious intent, claiming the complainant was more interested in having the actor jailed.
Rajpal’s lawyer Bhaskar Upadhyay, speaking to ETimes, called the actor “a family man” who is “not a lawyer” and “does not understand legal technicalities.”
Alleging that the complainant’s goal was to get the actor jailed rather than repayment, Bhaskar said, “The complainant said, ‘We don’t want this and just kindly execute the decree by sending him to jail’.”
The lawyer added that Rajpal had already surrendered his property documents worth nearly Rs 40 crore before the court as collateral.
“He surrendered it before the court stating the value of my property is more than 40 crores,” he said.
The lawyer further revealed that Rs 2.5 crore was already arranged, and the remaining dues are also being settled.
Bhaskar further emphasised that Rs 5 crore was invested by the complainant in the movie, and was not a personal loan given to Rajpal.
“These 5 crores was invested by the complainant in that movie, not given a personal loan to him for his personal needs,” the lawyer said.
He shared that several Bollywood celebrities extended financial help to Rajpal, but did not reveal their names.
“He is strong. He says he will comply with court directions. His only request is that his side be properly heard,” Bhaskar said.
Expressing gratitude and optimism after the bail order, Rajpal’s brother Chandrapal Yadav told reporters, “Humme kissi se koi shikayat nahi hai… Ab humare ache din aane wale hain. (We have no complaints; Good days are ahead.)”
Asked about industry support, he said, “Yeh sab bhaisaab hi bataenge. (My brother will speak about this).”
As per reports, Bollywood stars such as Ajay Devgn, Salman Khan, Sonu Sood, David Dhawan, and Varun Dhawan have extended financial assistance to the actor.
