New Delhi: A police complaint against popular Netflix series ‘Sacred Games’ was withdrawn after Congress president Rahul Gandhi recently tweeted in favour of freedom of expression.
The West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee member, Rajeev Sinha, had filed the complaint alleging the show used derogatory language against former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Following Rahul’s tweet, he withdrew the complaint.
On Saturday, Rahul Gandhi had tweeted, “BJP/RSS believe the freedom of expression must be policed & controlled. I believe this freedom is a fundamental democratic right. My father lived and died in the service of India. The views of a character on a fictional web series can never change that. #SacredGames”
According to a report in the Indian Express, Sinha was quoted saying that he agrees with the party president and that Rajiv Gandhi’s “contribution and charisma is above such petty things”. He also added that “there is so much of hatred all around that we cannot promote intolerance”.
