Bhopal: Veteran Congress leader and former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh’s younger brother Laxman Singh has been expelled from the grand old party.

Laxman, a five-time MP and three-time MLA, has been expelled for six years on charges of “anti-party activities.”

The announcement was made on Wednesday through a statement by Tariq Anwar, Member Secretary of the party’s Disciplinary Action Committee.

“Congress president has expelled Laxman Singh, former MLA, Madhya Pradesh, from the primary membership of the Indian National Congress for a period of six years with immediate effect due to his anti-party activities,” the statement said.

Though no further detail was provided, party insiders believe the disciplinary action against the Madhya Pradesh leader followed Laxman’s public statements criticising the Congress high command multiple times.

The Madhya Pradesh Pradesh Congress Committee had earlier flagged Laxman’s conduct, before the matter was forwarded to the AICC Disciplinary Committee.

Last month, Laxman questioned the political maturity of Rahul Gandhi and Robert Vadra in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack.

“The country is suffering the consequences of their immaturity,” he had said.

It triggered outrage within Congress, and a showcause notice was issued to him.

Laxman was first elected as an MP in a by-election in 1994 from Rajgarh. He defected to the BJP after a decade, and won on its ticket in 2004. Laxman lost in the 2005 Lok Sabha election, and returned to Congress fold in 2013.
