Lucknow: Congress leader Rakesh Rathore was on Thursday arrested by UP police in a rape case.
Rathore, who won from Sitapur Lok Sabha constituency in the 2024 general elections, was in the middle of a press conference when police arrived there.
Rathore surrendered, and was taken to the court under heavy security.
A woman filed a case against the MP, accusing him of raping her.
The woman alleged in her complaint that Rathore raped her multiple times over a period of four years after promising to marry her and launch her political career.
The woman submitted all her call details and call recordings with the MP.
On Wednesday, Rathore’s anticipatory bail plea was rejected by the Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court and asked him to surrender. The MP-MLA court in Sitapur had also turned down Rathore’s petition earlier.
“The High Court granted me 2-week time to appear before the lower court and follow the legal procedure. So I am surrendering before the police in this connection… I am confident that I will get justice in the court of people and court of law… The matter is sub-judice before the court, so it will not be correct to speak on it,” Rathore told ANI.
The complainant’s husband has filed a separate complaint accusing Rathore and his son of putting pressure on family members to settle the case.
