New Delhi: Ahead of the last day of filing nominations, the Congress on Thursday announced its list of six candidates for the upcoming biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha.
The candidates, approved by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, include senior party leader and sitting MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who has been renominated from Telangana alongside Vem Narender Reddy, who is currently an advisor to Chief Minister Revanth Reddy.
Telangana will have two vacant seats in April.
From Chhattisgarh, sitting MP Phulo Devi Netam has been fielded for re-election. Congress has also nominated Karamvir Singh Boudh from Haryana, Anurag Sharma from Himachal Pradesh, and M Christopher Tilak from Tamil Nadu, where the party was given a Rajya Sabha seat by the ruling DMK.
A total of 37 Rajya Sabha seats across ten states – seven in Maharashtra, six in Tamil Nadu, five each in Bihar and West Bengal, four in Odisha, three in Assam, two each in Telangana, Chhattisgarh, and Haryana, and one in Himachal Pradesh – will go to polls on March 16.
In Odisha, the Congress is backing BJD’s nominee Datteswar Hota, a renowned urologist, whom the regional party has positioned as a “common candidate”.
