New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi’s tweet disclosing and sharing the identity of a rape victim’s family was removed and his account locked, Twitter India informed Delhi High Court on Wednesday.
“Rahul Gandhi’s tweet violated our policy also, we have already removed that tweet and his Twitter account has also been locked,” Twitter’s counsel submitted.
“Petitioner has wrongly impleaded @TwitterIndia. We have removed it (Rahul Gandhi’s Tweet). It is against our policy. That account is locked,” he further said.
The high court was hearing a PIL seeking directions to National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) to take necessary legal action against Gandhi for his tweet, as well as for Delhi Police to register an FIR against the Congress leader under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015.
Makarand Suresh Mhadlekar, the petitioner, contended that Gandhi violated section 74 of the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015 and section 23(2) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, both of which say that identity of a child victim of a crime shall not be disclosed.
The bench of Justices DN Patel and Jyoti Singh took note of Twitter’s submission and set September 27 as the next date for hearing.
Hitting out at Twitter, Congress party had challenged the microblogging site to lock its accounts.
