Mumbai: As many as 13 Maoists were killed in an encounter in the forests with Maharashtra Police’s C-60 commandos in the Gadchiroli district, a senior cop said on Friday.
The encounter started at 5.30 am in a forested area close to Kotmi, where the Maoists had camped for a meeting, DIG (Gadchiroli) Sandeep Patil, was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
“Based on specific inputs, the police party – comprising C-60 commandos — had launched a search operation in the forest,” Patil said. He also said that the rebels had spotted the cops from a distance and opened fire.
The encounter lasted for an hour, after which the remaining rebels escaped into the surrounding vegetation, Superintendent of Police (Gadchiroli), Ankit Goyal, told the news agency.
