Dhaniakhali/Kolkata: At a time when the country is hitting an all-time high of coronavirus cases, Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) top leader in West Bengal, Dilip Ghosh declared at a public rally, “Corona chole gechhe (Coronavirus is gone)”, in Dhaniakhali.
He also claimed that Mamata Banerjee was only ‘pretending’ the virus is around and imposing lockdowns for the sole purpose of blocking BJP rallies ahead of elections due next year.
Assembly elections in the state are just months away and the state’s BJP unit appears to have recruited the coronavirus in its campaign against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress, reported NDTV.
Bengal has close to 2 lakh infections and over 3,700 deaths.
Dilip Ghosh’s remark is contrary to the PM’s stance on the COVID-19 crisis. On Thursday he urged people not to take coronavirus lightly, wear face masks and maintain social distancing until scientists develop a vaccine. Also, unlike other leaders who have switched to online rallies, Ghosh addressed a real, crowded one.
