Kolkata: Police recovered around Rs 2.5 crore in cash, along with a small quantity of gold and some electronic devices, from a flat in West Bengal’s Malda district during an overnight operation linked to a probe into a banned cough syrup smuggling racket, police said on Monday.
The search was carried out jointly by the Malda and Dakshin Dinajpur district police, with support from the state police’s Special Operations Team (SOT), at a flat in Mangalbari under Malda police station limits, they said, news agency PTI reported.
The raid came after an earlier seizure of a large consignment of banned cough syrup in neighbouring Dakshin Dinajpur district, which had triggered the follow-up investigation.
“Bundles of cash amounting to around Rs 2.5 crore were seized from the flat. A small quantity of gold and some electronic devices were also seized. The exact value of the articles is being ascertained,” a police officer said.
Investigators suspect the money may be linked to the illegal trade in banned cough syrup and are checking whether an inter-state smuggling network was operating behind the racket, the officer said.
Police are also examining the source of the cash, the ownership of the flat and who had been using the premises. The probe is continuing.
