Mumbai: A man, who moved court to seek free treatment for all COVID-19 patients in Maharashtra, has been asked to pay a fine of Rs 5 lakh.

The Bombay High Court termed petitioner Sagar Jondhale’s demand as “preposterous” and directed the educationist to deposit the amount with the state government within a month.

Jondhale had argued that private hospitals were charging “exorbitant” amounts for COVID-19 treatment, making it very difficult for common people who tested positive for the deadly virus.

Maharashtra is the only state in India with over 1 lakh coronavirus cases as well as the maximum number of deaths (5537) so far. The state accounts for nearly 50% of fatalities in the country.
