Jharsuguda: A court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for murder of a former vice-chancellor of Odisha’s Sambalpur University four years ago.
As per the case, the convict, Praveen Dhooriya of Kuanramala village under Laikera police station in Jharsuguda district had gone to the house of former vice-chancellor Dhrubaraj Nayak on July 27, 2021. Dhooriya asked some money from Nayak to consume liquor.
While Nayak refused to give the money, Dhooriya insisted on it and was engaged in an argument with him. As the argument escalated, Dhooriya, in a fit of rage, attacked the former vice-chancellor with an axe and fled.
Nayak sustained critical injuries in the attack and started bleeding profusely. Hie family members rushed him to a local hospital. But Nayak succumbed in the hospital.
After Nayak’s family filed a complaint against Dhooriya, the police registered a case and started investigation. They also traced Dhooriya and arrested him. Later, the police filed the chargesheet following detailed investigation in the court.
After hearing the witnesses and verifying the evidence, the Additional District Judge (ADJ) in Jharsuguda convicted Dhooriya and sentenced him to life imprisonment on Friday.
