New Delhi: As per Union government figures, last month’s Tablighi Jamaat congregation in Delhi has been linked to 4,291 of India’s 14,378 coronavirus cases in the country, which makes it nearly three out of every 10 cases.
But the Indian capital seems to have come to grips with the problem as the city hasn’t reported a Jamat-linked positive case in two days after the government traced hundreds of people with links to the congregation in March and sent them to quarantine centres.
But India isn’t the only country to have suffered due to Jamaat workers unwittingly spreading the virus.
In a number of countries — mostly in south and south-east Asia — the Jamaat has been linked to 3,000 cases till date.
According to data compiled by Hindustan Times, Jamaat workers are learnt to have tested positive for the Sars-CoV-2 pathogen that causes coronavirus. Seventy-nine of the 5,900 coronavirus cases detected in Indonesia are linked to the Jamaat.
In Malaysia, a Tablighi Jamaat congregation at a mosque complex near Kuala Lumpur is considered to be the source of hundreds of coronavirus cases in the country.
In Pakistan, over 500 of 7,000-plus cases are linked to the Jamaat workers.
