New Delhi: India recorded more than 1.15 lakh new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours on Tuesday. This is so far the highest single-day figure since the start of the pandemic. The government said that the next four weeks are “very, very critical”.
The country reported 630 casualties in the last 24 hours to take the toll to 1,66,177. The total number of cases stands at 1,27,00,000.
According to the government on Tuesday, vaccinations will not be opened up to a wider group anytime soon. “Why did we prioritise some groups over others? Because in this phase of vaccination (till around July), vaccines will be in limited supply,” Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan was quoted as saying by news agency ANI on Tuesday evening.
Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh are the five states with the highest spike in daily COVID-19 infections.
Worst-hit Maharashtra reported over 55,000 COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours. A centralised system has been set by the civic body in Mumbai for bed allotments to avoid chaos and crowding at hospitals.
