Bhubaneswar: It’s the mass nesting season for Olive Ridley turtles in Odisha and the ongoing COVID-19 lockdown has allowed them to go about with it peacefully.
According to the Forest Department, around 7 lakh Olive Ridleys laid eggs on the beaches in Odisha this nesting season and none of the turtles were harmed or killed by human interference.
Nearly 3 lakh turtles laid eggs along the 4.5 km-long Rushikulya beach in Ganjam district after March 21, and around 4 lakh on the Gahirmatha beach.
According to environmentalists, the nationwide lockdown has provided perfect conditions to these aquatic creatures for nesting this year.
