COVID-19 Update: India’s Tally Tops 55 Lakh; Toll Close To 89K

New Delhi: An overnight addition of 75,083 COVID-19 cases took India’s affected tally past 55 lakh to stand at 55,62,664 on Tuesday.

About 1,053 more patients succumbed to the infection in the last 24 hours, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare informed.

A total of 88,935 people have lost their lives due to COVID-19 so far with the country reporting more than 1,000 deaths daily for over a fortnight. India’s case fatality rate has, however, dropped to 1.60 per cent.

The death toll outdid the number of the single-day surge in COVID-19 cases for the second day in a row.

India continues to occupy the top position in the world in terms of total recoveries as more than 43 lakh infected people have recovered. India’s recoveries constitute 19 per cent of total global recoveries, informed the ministry. India has recorded high single-day COVID-19 recoveries successively during the last three days, informed the ministry.

About 80.86 per cent (44,97,868) people have recovered from the infection so far with 1,01,468 being discharged on Monday. Another 17.54 per cent (9,75,861) are still under treatment.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 6,53,25,779 samples have been tested for COVID-19, which includes Monday’s 9,33,185.
