Bhubaneswar: With the emergence of a new mutant strain of COVID-19 in some states, the neighbouring states, the Odisha government on Tuesday decided not to reopen primary and upper primary schools for now.

As per the earlier schedule, Classes I to VIII were set to resume on Tuesday.

However, School and Mass Education Minister Samir Ranjan Dash informed that with the sudden spike in COVID-19 cases in neighbouring Chhattisgarh, the Odisha government has decided not to reopen primary and upper primary schools.

“The state government will decide the date for the reopening of these schools after a thorough review,” the minister told the media.

Dash also said state nodal officers have gone to the schools in bordering districts of Odisha. They will oversee the implementation of the standard operating procedure (SOP) against COVID-19 issued by the government.
