Bhubaneswar: As many as 126 inmates of various jails in Odisha were released on special parole for three months on May 15, DIG (Jail) Subhakant Mishra has informed.
The DIG said following a Supreme Court (SC) directive, the state government had compiled a list of 449 prisoners to be released on parole. Of them, 126 were released and the rest would be granted parole very soon.
Expressing concern over the health of jail inmates amid the COVID pandemic, the top court had directed state governments to immediately release prisoners from overcrowded jails.
Mishra said the SC has directed the states to again grant parole to the prisoners who were similarly released during the first wave of COVID-19 last year.
