Cuttack: Two IT professionals of Odisha’s Cuttack city were allegedly duped to the tune of around Rs 45 lakh by the scamsters in a cryptocurrency investment fraud.
The victims belong to CDA and Purighat areas and they have lodged complaints in this regard with Cyber police. “Two separate cases have been registered in the last two days and investigation is underway,” said Additional DCP, Cuttack, Anil Mishra told the media on Sunday.
He said that the victims had initially received a message on their WhatsApp from an unknown number. “They were added to a group on Telegram app and were given some false tasks to perform. The fraudsters told the points earned by the duo for the several tasks assigned to them. Later, they were asked to visit a cryptocurrency site, where they bought some bitcoins, expecting 5 to 10 times return on their investment,” Mishra said.
The sites were fake and the fraudsters duped them of around Rs 45 lakh in this manner, he added.
The scamsters allegedly looted around Rs 20 lakh from one engineer and over Rs 23 lakh from the other.
