Koraput: Central University of Orissa (CUO), Koraput, celebrated the 9th Foundation Day at its permanent campus at Sunabeda on Tuesday. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sachidananda Mohanty hoisted the varsity flag and inaugurated the Foundation Day Programme.
On this occasion, Prof. Harish Trivedi, former Professor of English, University of Delhi, distinguished critic, academic and translator delivered the foundation day lecture on ‘The Place of Humanities in Higher Education’.
In his inaugural address, Prof. Mohanty said, “Higher education today is at crossroads. The most important aspect of a University is to cultivate a vibrant cultural and academic atmosphere and create avenues of employment for the students.”
Expressing satisfaction over the progress made in the last eight years, he said the varsity is also looking forward to the visit of NAAC team early next month.
Prof. Harish Trivedi said, “Establishment of the University in remote places like Koraput provide scope to students of the region to gain quality education. Humanities study man as a whole. In our culture, the divine and the human had no distinction”.
He also said art cannot be used to make money. “The Idea of higher education is to teach the mind. One should not finalise everything through logic. One should have an open attitude towards education,” he added.
He urged the gathering to retain a bit of poet within them.
