Berhampur: In the latest case of cyber fraud in Odisha, a deputy executive engineer in Ganjam district has been duped of more than Rs 1 lakh within an hour.
According to sources, deputy executive engineer of Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) M Nageswar Subuddhi, staying in his own house in Surah Vihar, had received a text message on his mobile phone four days back. It stating that power connection to his house would be disconnected, if he did not pay the bill before evening.
When Nageswar clicked on the message, an online page opened and he was told to mention his mobile phone number and e-mail ID. After he did so, the engineer was asked to download an app from Google Playstore and deposit Rs 10 in the app.
Nageswar made the payment from his debit card of HDFC Bank in the app. Soon after, the fraudsters first withdrew Rs 4,000 and then Rs 19,999. Within an hour, they withdrew Rs 1,03,996 from the engineer’s bank account.
