Bhubaneswar: More than Rs 7 crore have been taken by cyber frauds from the accounts of people of Odisha capital in the last 7 months.
Speaking to media persons in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday, Bhubaneswar DCP Prateek Singh said the residents of Bhubaneswar were duped of Rs 7,89,83,000 by the cyber frauds this year. The police have recovered Rs 70 lakh of the lost amount. As many as 2,467 cyber fraud cases were registered during the period while 30 fraudsters have been nabbed so far, he added.
Singh said cyber cell in Bhubaneswar received total 368 calls including 321 from Bhubaneswar police district and 47 from outside in July.
The police were receiving complaints of mainly three types of frauds including those related to social media, UPI and credit and debit cards. Of the cases in the month, 102 were related to social media related frauds, 148 UPI frauds and 71 credit card and debit card frauds, the DCP said.
The people were duped of total Rs 1,38,64,000 through various means, while the police have frozen and recovered Rs 30.38 lakh of the amount, he added.
On the modus operandi of the cyber frauds, Singh said they are sending different apps to the people either with allurement or warning. If the victim uploads those apps, the frauds can have access to the latter’s activities including social media, financial transactions, bank deposits and withdrawals, passwords. Armed with this information, the frauds easily dupe the people, he said.
The DCP also appealed to the people to be aware of these frauds to protect their money. Instead of responding to such messages, the people should inform the cyber police for necessary action, he said.
