Cyclone ‘Sitrang’: Heavy Rain To Lash Odisha From Oct 23; Check Wind Warning

Bhubaneswar: With the low pressure over the Bay of Bengal likely to intensify into a depression, deep depression and then a cyclonic storm by October 24, Odisha is likely to experience heavy showers for three days, beginning October 23.

“The low pressure is very likely to move west-northwestwards and concentrate into a depression over eastcentral & adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal around October 22 and into a deep depression on October 23. Subsequently, it is very likely to recurve northwards and intensify into a cyclonic storm over westcentral and adjoining eastcentral Bay of Bengal by October 24. Thereafter, it is likely to gradually move north-northeastwards and reach near West Bengal-Bangladesh coasts on October 25, skirting Odisha coast,” the India Meteorological Department said in a special bulletin on Thursday.

The MeT office has issued a yellow warning for some districts of the state from October 23-25. “There will be no major weather till October 23 morning. However rainfall activity associated with the system is very likely to commence from the early hours of  October 24 over coastal districts of Odisha,” it said.

RAIN FORECAST

WIND WARNING

October 22: Squally weather with wind speed reaching 45-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is very likely over eastcentral and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal. ]

October 23: Squally wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph is very likely over westcentral and adjoining eastcentral Bay of Bengal.

October 24: Gale wind speed reaching 60-70 kmph gusting to 80 kmph is likely over westcentral and adjoining eastcentral and north Bay of Bengal.

October 25: Gale wind speed reaching 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph is likely over north and adjoining central Bay of Bengal.

SEA CONDITIONS

Sea condition is very likely to be rough to very rough over central adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal from October 22, over westcentral and adjoining eastcentral and North Bay of Bengal on October 24, and over north and adjoining central Bay of Bengal on October 25.

FISHERMEN WARNING

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the deep sea area of central Bay of Bengal from October 22 and along and off Odisha coast and west-central and North Bay of Bengal from October 23 till further notice. Fishermen in the deep sea have been advised to return to the coast by October 22.

Meanwhile, seven coastal districts in Odisha – Ganjam, Puri, Khurda, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Bhadrak, and Balasore – have been put on alert and asked to take steps to deal with any situation. Arrangements are being made at cyclone shelters, schools, colleges, kalyan mandaps and other places to safely accommodate people if it becomes necessary to undertake evacuation in affected areas, Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Pramila Mallik said on Thursday.
