Cyclonic Depression To Cross Coast Near Chennai Tomorrow Morning; Check Forecast For Odisha

Bhubaneswar: The Cyclonic Depression over Bay of Bengal, which is expected to cross coast near Chennai on Thursday morning, is unlikely to have any severe impact on Odisha.

“The Depression moved westnorthwestwards with a speed of 15 kmph during past 6 hours and lay centered at 8.30 am over Southwest and adjoining Westcentral Bay of Bengal, about 320 km east-southeast of Chennai (Tamil Nadu), 350 km east-northeast of Puducherry and 400 km southeast of Nellore (Andhra Pradesh). It is likely to move west-northwestwards and cross north Tamil Nadu – South Andhra Pradesh coasts between Puducherry and Nellore, close to Chennai during early morning of October 17,” the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Wednesday.

It is expected to bring winds of 35-55 kmph.

According to the weather agency, light to moderate rain/thundershower may occur at one or two places in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Sundargarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri and Jharsuguda districts on October 16 and Cuttack, Khurda, Nayagarh, Puri, Ganjam, and Gajapati on October 17.

While light to moderate rain may continue at some places till October 22, yellow warning of thunderstorm with lightning has been sounded for several districts of the state from October 18-20.

Thunderstorm with lightning may occur at isolated places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam and Gajapati on October 18. Similar warning has been issued for isolated places in of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada and Nabarangpur on October 19. Thunderstorm with lightning very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Nawarangpur, Kalahandi, Ganjam, Gajapati on October 20.

It further stated that easterly winds are prevailing over the region.

Depression Impact

The IMD has issued a red alert for Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Chengalpet as these districts may overnight receive heavy to very heavy rainfall (6cm to 20cm) with extremely heavy rainfall (more than 21cm) at one or two places.

✓ Tamil Nadu & Puducherry: Light to moderate rainfall over most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places is very likely over north Tamil Nadu & Puducherry on October 16 and isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall over north interior Tamil Nadu on October 17. Light to moderate rainfall over most places with heavy rainfall at isolated places is very likely over south Tamil Nadu during October 16-17.

✓ South Andhra Pradesh & Rayalaseema: Light to moderate rainfall over most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places is likely on October 16 and heavy rainfall at isolated places is likely on October 17.

✓ Kerala & south Interior Karnataka: Light to moderate rainfall over most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places is likely over Kerala and south Interior Karnataka during October 16-17.

✓ Squally weather with wind speeds up to 60 kmph is also predicted over southwest Bay of Bengal and along Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and south Andhra Pradesh coasts.

✓ Fishermen are advised not to venture into Southwest and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal till October 17. Fishermen out at sea are advised to return to coasts.
