Berhampur: The daylight murder of a villager triggered a rampage with a mob setting fire to three houses belonging to the accused in Ganjam district on Sunday morning.
The incident was reported from Khadala Sahi village in Kodala block.
Locals said the victim, Kalu Nahak, was cycling back home after purchasing grocery in the morning. A group of villagers, including some women, waylaid him near a forest bungalow and threw chilli powder at his face.
Nahak fell down from his cycle. The accused then hacked him with sharp weapons and crushed his head with a stone.
Tension ran high at the village after the killing. Besides torching the houses of the accused, the villagers blocked the main road at Kodala by burning tyres and firewood.
Kodala police said they have launched an investigation.
