Dhaka: A week after the brutal lynching of Dipu Chandra Das, news of another Hindu man being beaten to death by mob violence has emerged in Bangladesh.
The victim, identified as 30-year-old Amrit Mandal alias Samrat, was assaulted late on Wednesday night at Hosaindanga Old Market in Rajbari district’s Pangsha Upazila. Police found him in a critical condition and shifted him to a local hospital, where he was declared dead at around 2 am, The Daily Star reported.
Samrat faced the ire of local residents, who accused him of extortion. The situation got serious, and escalated into mob violence.
According to villagers, Samrat had allegedly been demanding money from a local resident named Shahidul Islam. On Wednesday night, Samrat and his associates reportedly went to Shahidul’s house to collect the money. After the family raised an alarm shouting ‘robbers’, villagers rushed there and attacked Samrat.
According to police, Samrat was listed in their records as leader of local group, referred to as ‘Samrat Bahini’.
Samrat reportedly had at two cases registered against him, including a murder allegation.
Local villagers said Samrat would routinely intimidate villagers and collect money forcibly. He had reportedly returned to Bangladesh recently after a long stay in India.
